The key to a long and healthy life is proper nutrition. This goes double for when you’re expecting a little one, as you are responsible for both you and your baby’s health. Here are some tips for proper pregnancy nutrition to ensure you have the happiest, healthiest baby possible.

1.  Eat more fiber.  Foods high in fiber are whole grains, almonds, fruits, and vegetables. Fiber regulates your digestive system and keeps bowel movements regular. It is also helpful in cleansing your digestive tract.  Foods high in fiber help ensure proper pregnancy nutrition as they remove toxins and other harmful substances that could endanger the health of your unborn child.

2.  Avoid processed foods. A pregnant woman’s body is much more susceptible to bacterial infections. Oftentimes bacteria can enter the body through the food you eat, especially processed foods. Choose all natural and fresh foods when possible.

3.  A well-balanced diet is the only way to ensure proper pregnancy nutrition.  You should eat foods from each food group (in the right amounts) in order to get everything your body needs.  For example:

  • vegetables for fiber, vitamins and minerals;
  • fruits for folate, vitamins and minerals;
  • whole grains are also rich in fiber, iron, and magnesium and a good source of carbohydrate for energy;
  • meat for protein for growth and development of your unborn
  • dairies for calcium; and
  • oils for healthy fats and vitamin E.
