Frozen yogurt has become very popular and seen by many as a healthier alternative to ice cream just because yogurt is known as a healthy food. Yogurt by its definition only includes curdled milk and live cultures. If there are more ingredients in a brand of yogurt then this, chances are it is loaded with sugar and additives. But is frozen yogurt really healthier than ice cream? If you take a look at the ingredients in many frozen yogurt brands, the answer is usually no and it ends up not being the innocent treat we think we are eating. Frozen yogurt usually contains a lot of added sugar and is loaded with additives or unnatural ingredients. We all know that too much sugar can be bad for you and spike your blood sugar or insulin levels. But that is not all. Taking a look at some of the national chains who offer frozen yogurt, you will find that most of them are loaded with several additives like maltodextrin, sodium citrate, cellulose gum, disodium phosphate, and many propylene glycol additives that are just not good for your body. Some frozen yogurt brands contained carrageenan which is a thickening agent made from red seaweed that has been linked to adverse health effects. Although the science is hardly conclusive at this point, you should avoid eating anything that is in question. And while there are healthier alternatives in frozen yogurt brands, it will be harder to know what you are getting at some ice cream or frozen yogurt parlors offering the treat unless someone there has an idea of what ingredients are in their products.

How to Decide If A Frozen Yogurt Is Healthy

So you are out either in a supermarket or you are at a national chain of ice cream stores that has frozen yogurt on the menu. How do you know what is healthy or not? Well if you can check the label on something in a market, then it is always a good rule to look for products that contain less than five total ingredients, or if you do not know what the ingredients are, it is best to leave it. Most natural foods or products have little additives or sugar. And sugar can come in a lot of different forms such as corn syrup, dextrose, concentrated juices, polydextrose and pure can sugar are all “sugar” no matter what their name.

Should I Eat Frozen Yogurt Or Not?

The bottom line here is to know that the majority of frozen yogurt out there is not healthy. But then again you are probably not eating frozen yogurt every single day. Use your best judgment on everything you eat. If you are not sure about what is in it, then skip it. If you eat a frozen yogurt once in a while, then chances are you do not need to worry about it. Is it healthier than ice cream? The answer to this is probably not. The difference of course is in the taste and some people prefer the taste of frozen yogurt over ice cream. Keep in mind that just because it is labeled as yogurt does not mean it is healthier or contains less sugar than ice cream. As with anything, moderation is key.
